Keeping an eye on things - even with dust and dirt on the construction site

The new GSt-A07C is a robust operating device with all kinds of suitable interfaces and protocols.

The construction site rattles as the large excavators roll overhead. Dust swirls up and restricts part of the field of vision of all those who operate the large working machines. To prevent this from becoming a hazard, the construction workers must always keep a clear view and maneuver their machine safely across the construction site. Intuitive operation that is still clearly visible even in adverse environments is particularly important. An important role is played by operating devices on which the information in modern applications converges. After all, the display in the machine not only shows data, it is also integrated into a large network of other functions, devices and controls. In addition to the robustness of the operating device, the presence of interfaces and the use of modern protocols are of great importance. The GSt-A07C offers both.

Readability even in direct sunlight

The operator interfaces are equipped with low-reflection displays that allow reading even in direct sunlight. The GSt-A07C was specially developed for use in mobile machines, and its colorful design makes it stand out even in the monotonous construction site landscape. In terms of weight and robustness, we have found an optimal solution: Thanks to an aluminum pressure housing, the displays remain light with a weight of less than one kilogram, but are robust and thus precisely suitable for outdoor use. The flat design fits in well in almost all cabins. Flexible installation in portrait or landscape format makes the GSt-A displays an attractive and functional human-machine interface. At the same time, the display's color TFT technology ensures permanent readability from different angles.

Interfaces expand range of functions

Without interfaces, there would be no need for operating devices: after all, the display is only one part of the comprehensive control of mobile machinery. To ensure a smooth process on the construction site, we have thought of all modern interfaces. The GSt-A07C has up to three CAN interfaces, as well as an Ethernet and USB connection, of course. Four video inputs and an audio output complete the multimedia functions. The portfolio is complemented by various I/O interfaces.

Protocols and software of course

The communication of modern machine components is standardized via protocols. This also applies to mobile machines on the construction site. The GSt-A07C can be integrated into the networked infrastructure on site using industry-standard protocols. The CAN field bus system, with which the operating device communicates with other machine components, plays the most important role here. Simple configuration and control is possible via the openSYDE software platform, and the HTTP, FTP, MQTT, SSL, Modbus TCP, UDP/P, DHC/P and OPC/UA protocols are also on board as standard.

The software was also developed with the user in mind: free programming is carried out using the in-house integrated development environment GSe-VISU. There is also a programming option via CODESYS 3.5. The software can be used to continuously adjust the display brightness and button lighting in RGB. An ambient light sensor makes it possible to automatically adjust the brightness of the display and button lighting so that operators do not run the risk of being dazzled or not being able to see well enough. An integrated temperature sensor measures the internal temperature of the device at all times and a measuring circuit monitors the supply voltage. This increases operational safety.

The GSt-A07C control unit is thus much more than just a display for showing information. For crane operators and excavator drivers, the display becomes the central interface to the digital machine world.
